Join members of the Sandy River Chapter, NW Steelheaders as you learn the elements of steelhead fishing. This workshop will feature hands on approach, and will cover the following topics:

  • Regulations and licenses required
  • Selection of the proper matching rod and reel
  • How reels work and how to cast
  • Types of lines, and which techniques to use them with
  • How to tie the essential knots
  • Hook sizes, types and sharpening
  • The three most common methods: drift fishing, bobbers and jigs, and spinners or spoons
  • Where do I cast? The best fish holding water for the three common methods
  • River maps of the Sandy River, Clackamas River and Oxbow Park
  • Cooking and smoking recipes

Snacks, soft drinks and a simple picnic style lunch are included in the workshop fee.

If you are wanting to bring your own spinning rod, the average Steelhead/Salmon spinning rod is a 8.5 or 9 foot rod with a medium to medium heavy action.  A matching reel would need to hold up to 150-200 yards of up to 15 pound test line.  If fishing salt water stainless steel ball bearings in the reel are a good idea due to the corrosiveness of salt water.

The Workshop runs from 9:00 AM- 4:00 PM.

The location is – Glenn Otto Park, Sam Cox Bldg., 1102 E. Historic Columbia River Highway, Troutdale, OR. 97060

Cost is: $52.00/Adult & $22/Youth (must be 9 or older) All youth must be accompanied by a registered Adult.

There will be an on-shore hands on fishing trip on the Sandy River following the Workshop on Saturday March 4th for all workshop participants, 8 AM- 2 PM. ODFW  has provided loaner spinning rods for the day if you don’t have one by then. Learn hands on from the experienced members of the Sandy River Chapter streamside!

Class fee covers a one year discounted membership in the NW Steelheaders a local conservation and sports fishing organization.
